Destruction of the Old Bridge in Novi Sad

On April 1st, 1999. NATO planes destroyed the bridge over Danube in Novi Sad connected the city with Petrovaradin on the Srem side. Hard to understand why since the bridge was old, it had no military significance since the passage of heavy vehicles was not allowed. Residents of Novi Sad liked the bridge very much, it was considered one of the symbols of the town. But NATO warlords don't care...

The bridge originally completed in 1928. has been already bombed and destroyed once before, by Germans in World War II. It was rebuilt in 1945. Here is one more photo of the wrecked bridge. Because of this vandal act the navigation on Danube and on the river path from Rotterdam to Black Sea over Rhine, Mein, and Danube is blocked.
